Lithium batteries can be roughly divided into two categories - lithium metal batteries and lithium ion batteries. Lithium metal batteries contain an anode made of lithium metal or lithium compound. These are non-rechargeable primary batteries and can only be used once. They are used in a wide variety of devices, including watches, car key fobs, cameras, calculators, and medical devices such as pacemakers and defibrillators.
Lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, contain lithium in the form of ions. Depending on their size, type, and chemical composition, a lithium-ion battery may contain one or more lithium-ion cells. These are secondary batteries that can be recharged and used over and over again. They are mainly used in portable consumer electronics such as smartphones, tablets, laptops, digital cameras and handheld game consoles. They are also used in power tools, power wheelchairs, electric cars and aircraft.
