Lithium battery transportation restrictions

Time:2023-11-13 Preview:1 source:News

Due to the risks posed by lithium cells and battery packs, hazardous materials regulations impose a number of restrictions on how they can be transported.

For example, individual lithium metal batteries cannot be transported as cargo on passenger flights. In order to be transported on passenger flights, relevant cells and battery packs must comply with specified quantity limits and may only be shipped or packaged with equipment. In addition, if transportation is required using passenger aircraft other than these configurations, approval must be obtained from the authorities of the country of origin, destination, and the country of the operator.

Likewise, in the case of emergency medical necessity, lithium cells and battery packs can be transported on passenger flights, provided the above approval is obtained.

For stand-alone lithium-ion batteries, they may be transported only if their state of charge is less than or equal to 30% of the rated capacity. In order to be able to transport lithium-ion batteries with a state of charge exceeding 30% of their rated capacity, approval must be obtained from the authorities in the country of origin and the country of the operator.

In addition, the above-mentioned rules regarding the carriage of lithium metal cells and battery packs on passenger aircraft also apply to lithium-ion cells and battery packs.
